A 49-year-old Limpopo police officer, Constance Mosibudu Sathekge, made her first appearance at the Morebeng Magistrate’s Court after being arrested for allegedly shooting and killing her son and his girlfriend. Sathekge, stationed at the Botlokwa Police Station, was charged following the tragic deaths of her 25-year-old son, Khutso Sathekge, and his 16-year-old girlfriend, Naledi Mmonwa.
The victims were discovered with multiple gunshot wounds and were rushed to the hospital, but both succumbed to their injuries shortly after arrival. According to National Prosecution Authority (NPA) spokesperson, Mashudu Malabi-Ndzangi, Sathekge called the police after the incident, and she was arrested immediately.
The incident unfolded on February 14, 2025, when Sathekge reportedly got into a heated argument with her son inside their home. Provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, explained that when authorities and paramedics arrived at the scene, they found Khutso Sathekge motionless with gunshot wounds and a sharp object in his hand. Naledi Mmonwa was also found injured, but despite efforts to save her, she later died in the hospital.
Following the incident, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) will be handling further investigations into the case. Sathekge’s matter was postponed to February 25 for a formal bail application.
In a separate but equally unsettling case, 42-year-old Sibongile Dlamini appeared in the Springs Magistrates Court, charged with orchestrating the murder of her husband, Banele Skosana. Skosana, 32, an officer with the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department, was shot and killed by two men while opening his tuckshop in KwaThema, Ekurhuleni, on February 7. Dlamini, a newlywed of just two months, appeared alongside her co-accused, 34-year-old Nhliziyozabantu Magwanyana, the alleged hitman. Both are charged with murder and conspiracy to commit murder. The case was postponed to February 21 to allow the state time to verify key details of the investigation.
