A fire at a local refinery has put the fuel supply to OR Tambo International Airport at risk, raising concerns about potential disruptions at South Africa’s busiest airport. The blaze, which broke out at the National Petroleum Refiners of South Africa (Natref) on January 4, has prompted the Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA) to spring into action to safeguard against any fuel shortages. As the clock ticks down to January 20, 2025, ACSA has moved swiftly to reassure passengers that normal operations will continue unhindered.

In a statement issued on January 12, ACSA confirmed that the airport’s fuel reserves would last for up to eight days, covering the period until January 20. The company further assured the public that plans were in place to maintain an uninterrupted supply of jet fuel. Two additional fuel deliveries are scheduled, with one set to arrive from Durban by January 27. Furthermore, ACSA is increasing fuel deliveries by rail, using additional capacity to bolster the supply chain and ensure there are no disruptions in service.

Despite these assurances, concerns have been raised over the possible mismanagement and corruption within the supply chain, with some South Africans quick to point fingers. However, ACSA remains confident in its contingency plans, emphasizing that all necessary measures are being taken to prevent any impact on airport operations. The company also noted that previous incidents, such as a global Microsoft service disruption on July 20, 2024, did not affect flights, highlighting its ability to handle operational challenges effectively.

As the situation develops, ACSA is working closely with its partners, including Natref, to ensure a stable and reliable fuel supply. Passengers are urged to stay informed, with ACSA continuing to monitor the situation closely and provide updates on the status of the airport’s fuel supply and operations.
