A shocking tragedy unfolded in Lower Gxulu, Keiskammahoek, when a 30-year-old man allegedly strangled his mother, 56-year-old Nontsikelelo Maweza, to death. The incident occurred on Wednesday, 16 October, in her home, leaving the community in disbelief. According to family spokesperson Petros Majola, Nontsikelelo had visible signs of abuse, including strangulation marks on her neck and bruises across her body. Despite the abuse she endured, her love for her son remained strong, making the tragedy even more heartbreaking. Neighbors reported hearing screams from the house, which led to the police being called to the scene.
By the time authorities arrived, however, it was too late. Nontsikelelo was found lifeless, and the police began their investigation. Petros Majola confirmed that her son was arrested shortly after the incident, with the community still reeling from the news. Many expressed shock, unable to comprehend that such violence could come from a son towards his own mother. The family’s grief has been compounded by the brutality of the crime, with neighbors and loved ones left questioning how such a tragedy could unfold in their community.
According to police spokeswoman Lieutenant-Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa, the police responded promptly after receiving calls from concerned neighbors who reported hearing screams coming from the house. When officers arrived, Nontsikelelo’s body was discovered, and the alleged suspect was initially absent from the scene. However, he later turned himself in to the police on Thursday, 17 October, in Keiskammahoek. Following his surrender, the 30-year-old man was arrested and charged with murder.
The case has since been brought before the Keiskamahoek Magistrate’s Court, where the suspect appeared on Monday, 21 October. His case was postponed for a formal bail application, with the next court date set for Monday, 28 October. As investigations continue, the community remains shaken by the loss of a beloved mother, and the story serves as a painful reminder of the dangers of domestic violence and the devastating consequences it can have.
