Minister of Electricity and Energy, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, has issued a strong appeal to South African households to upgrade their prepaid electricity meters before the November 24th deadline. This upgrade is part of Eskom and municipal efforts to transition over two million households onto the new prepaid meter Key Revision Numbers (KRN) system.
With the deadline fast approaching, Ramokgopa warned that after November 24, electricity entities will no longer dispense KRN1 tokens, rendering the old metering system inactive. This change is crucial, as it aims to ensure better efficiency and consistency in the electricity metering process.
During a recent briefing, the Minister emphasized the urgency of the deadline, stating that there would be no extensions. “There’s a time stamp on this prepaid meter. So, the point I want to make is that it is up to Sunday, and that’s when we are expected to ensure that everyone is recorded. Now people are coming across and saying, ‘Can you extend it?’ It’s not extendable. It’s technical, we can’t extend it, so it’s a hard stop,” Ramokgopa explained. He further warned that failing to upgrade the meter before the deadline would lead to the physical removal of the old meters, which could incur additional costs for affected households.
The finalisation of the Integrated Resource Plan 2023 was also discussed, with updates being provided on how the country is moving forward with its energy management strategies. However, the focus remains on ensuring that households are compliant with the new prepaid metering system before the cut-off date.
