The recent omission of former President Thabo Mbeki from the speaker’s list at Tito Mboweni’s funeral has sparked significant controversy, with Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) MP Mbuyiseni Ndlozi leading the charge in condemning the decision. What could have been a solemn, respectful farewell has instead become the center of a political firestorm, as Ndlozi directed his criticism at President Cyril Ramaphosa and the ruling African National Congress (ANC), calling the omission an unforgivable oversight.

Ndlozi, known for his sharp political commentary, was quick to voice his displeasure on social media. His remarks centered on the alleged exclusion of Mbeki, who was supposedly a former mentor and close friend of Mboweni, from delivering a tribute at the funeral. Mboweni, who passed away on October 12th, 2024, after a short illness, was laid to rest in his family village of Sasekane, Tzaneen, with President Ramaphosa delivering the official eulogy. Despite this, it was Mbeki’s absence that captured much of the public’s attention.

The Thabo Mbeki Foundation swiftly entered the fray, releasing Mbeki’s prepared speech, which underscored the close relationship he shared with Mboweni. According to the Foundation, Mbeki had been personally requested by Mboweni to speak at the funeral, a wish that was ultimately overlooked. “Tito saw President Mbeki as a mentor, leader, and friend. It was Tito’s final wish that Mbeki speak at his funeral,” the Foundation stated.

The omission of Mbeki’s name from the final speakers’ list, sent to him just a day before the service, raised eyebrows. While Mbeki graciously accepted the change without objection, Mboweni’s family later apologised, offering to amend the programme—an offer Mbeki declined.

Ndlozi’s public rebuke only served to inflame the situation further. In a tweet quoting Mbeki’s speech, he lashed out at government-run funerals, suggesting they frequently undermine the wishes of the deceased and their families. “The sad thing about government-run funerals is that they always undermine family wishes, especially [those of] the dead! A sad state of affairs. I can imagine the pain Mbeki feels! You can’t wish that on anyone!” Ndlozi lamented.

His critique, pointed and personal, resonated with many South Africans, sparking a flurry of reactions on social media. Some supported Ndlozi’s bold stance. Twitter user @vinniemm remarked, “Mbeki is only referred to as an ANC big gun or veteran when he says something the ANC wants to hear. Anything else, and he’s sidelined.” Meanwhile, @Only_Botake quipped, “Ndlozi kante when are you leaving the EFF stokvel?”
