Two suspects were arrested in Mpumalanga after police intercepted their vehicle and seized a staggering 644 kilograms of dagga, valued at approximately R2.4 million. The arrests took place on Sunday, January 19, when members of the Proactive and Combat Team stopped a white Hyundai bakkie with Mpumalanga registration plates as part of a routine stop-and-search operation on the R38 near Low’s Creek.

Upon searching the vehicle, officers discovered 15 large bags of dagga hidden inside. The total weight of the confiscated substance was about 644.14 kilograms. Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane confirmed the substantial haul, noting the estimated street value of the seized dagga to be R2.4 million.

Investigations revealed that the suspects, aged 31 and 39, were from Louville, a community near Low’s Creek, and were on their way to Matsulu when they were intercepted by law enforcement. Authorities suspect the two men were involved in a broader drug distribution network operating in the region, though further investigations are underway.

The suspects will face charges of possession and dealing in dagga and are scheduled to appear before the Barberton Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, January 21. This seizure is a significant blow to drug trafficking activities in the area and highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to curb the distribution of illegal substances in Mpumalanga.

As authorities continue their investigation, the arrest serves as a reminder of the vital role that proactive policing and routine stop-and-search operations play in maintaining public safety and dismantling illegal networks.
