Zuma was accompanied by the secretary general of the Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) Party, Floyd Shivambu.
Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, a Member of Parliament, has been accused of playing a role in inciting the violent protests that erupted across parts of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng following her father’s imprisonment in 2021. During the unrest, she posted several videos and images on social media that depicted violent scenes—such as trucks being set on fire and rioters clashing with authorities. Each post was accompanied by the hashtag #FreeJacobZuma, which many believe fueled the turmoil.
The charges against Zuma-Sambudla are part of a broader investigation into the events of July 2021, when widespread looting, arson, and protests led to the deaths of more than 350 people and caused significant damage to businesses. The unrest was triggered by her father’s sentence for contempt of court after he failed to comply with a Constitutional Court ruling to testify before the Zondo Commission.
Zuma-Sambudla’s posts on social media were scrutinized for their potential to inflame tensions, with many arguing that her actions contributed to the chaos that unfolded. The appearance of her father, along with Shivambu, signals the MK Party’s continued alignment with Zuma-Sambudla, with the MK Party taking a vocal stance on the issue.
As the court case proceeds, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla’s supporters, including her twin brother Duduzane Zuma and youth leaders of the MK Party, are expected to rally in her defense.
