A 49-year-old mother, Shayhieda Dollie, has been charged with murder and conspiracy to murder after allegedly plotting the death of her 22-year-old son, Moegamat Thaafir Dollie, in a chilling attempt to claim a life insurance payout. Dollie appeared in the New Brighton Magistrates Court on Friday, 8 November, following her arrest in connection with the premeditated murder, which is said to have taken place on 28 October 2024.
According to Luxolo Tyali, spokesman for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in the Eastern Cape, Dollie consulted several individuals about her son’s death, ultimately hiring hitmen from Johannesburg. The plot, which was reportedly driven by financial desperation, began when Dollie allegedly hired two men, known only as “Shaun” and “Oompie,” for an initial payment of R80,000, a sum that later grew to R380,000 due to delays in the plan’s execution.
The events unfolded when Dollie told her son that he had secured a job interview. She arranged for the hitmen to pick him up, leading to his tragic death. The motive, according to authorities, was to collect a R2 million life insurance payout, which would be used to cover the cost of the hired killers. Tyali added that Dollie, who is unemployed, had been struggling with her son’s drug addiction, and reportedly considered him a “nuisance” at home.
The state has opposed Dollie’s bail application, citing the seriousness of the crime. The case has been postponed to 15 November 2024 for further verification of her profile.
