A former officer of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, known as the Hawks, is set to appear in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday to face charges of corruption. According to Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale, the woman, who was served with a summons in December in Randfontein, is accused in connection with two criminal cases. These cases, which were registered at the Honeydew and Krugersdorp police stations, involve serious charges, including corruption, theft, and obstructing the administration of justice.

Mogale confirmed that the suspect is a former captain in the South African Police Service (SAPS) and had served as an investigator in the West Rand Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit in Gauteng. The charges against her stem from incidents that occurred in May 2023 and October 2024, with law enforcement agencies working to bring clarity and justice to the situation.

This case follows closely behind another high-profile arrest involving a senior Hawks officer, Brigadier Mapome Mohajane. Mohajane, aged 54, was arrested last week on allegations of corruption. Stationed at the Hawks’ head office in Tshwane, he is accused of attempting to interfere with an ongoing criminal investigation involving a councillor in Limpopo.

The incident, which occurred on January 14, 2022, saw Mohajane allegedly approach a fellow police officer who was serving as the investigating officer in the case against the councillor. He reportedly offered the officer promises of tenders and future favours in exchange for helping the councillor. Additionally, Mohajane is said to have used his position and influence within the police force to offer the investigating officer a promotion if he complied with the request.

Following a thorough investigation, Mohajane was arrested and charged with corruption. He appeared before the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court last Wednesday, where he was granted R10,000 bail. The case has been postponed to March for further proceedings.

These recent arrests highlight ongoing efforts within the Hawks to address corruption and misconduct within their ranks. As both cases proceed through the judicial system, the public will be closely watching to see how these serious charges are handled and whether the law enforcement agencies can maintain their integrity in the fight against crime.
