The Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, has confirmed that an investigation is underway regarding a potential breach of the 2024 matric results. This follows a troubling advertisement by a company, Edumarks, which claimed it could provide learners with access to their matric results for a fee. The company, which has been operating for over two years, promised to send resultsβcomplete with subjects and percentagesβvia email, offering a money-back guarantee if they failed to deliver.
Edumarksβ website offered an unsettling pitch to anxious students awaiting their National Senior Certificate (NSC) results, assuring that for a small one-time fee, learners could access their marks before the official release date. The company emphasized the convenience of bypassing the wait, offering a quick and easy way to relieve the stress of waiting for results. However, this claim raised red flags about the security and authenticity of the matric results.
Minister Gwarube addressed the issue at a media briefing during a congratulatory breakfast for the 2024 matric top achievers, held at the MTN Innovation Centre in Randburg. She revealed that the department had sought assistance from the Hawks and State Security to investigate the matter. According to Gwarube, the breach likely occurred at the final stages of the results compilation, after the marks were finalized but before their official release.
The Minister assured the public that the investigation is being treated seriously, with an arrest expected as part of the ongoing probe. Gwarube will announce the official outcome of the matric examinations later this evening, and the results will be made available to candidates tomorrow. The situation has raised concerns about the security of sensitive educational data, and the investigation aims to ensure that such breaches are dealt with swiftly.
