Parents are urged to prepare packed lunches for their children until new guidelines for food vendors are provided by the relevant authorities.
The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has announced the suspension of food sales in and around all schools in the province. This decision comes after a troubling rise in foodborne illnesses that have led to sickness and, in some cases, fatalities among learners. GDE spokesperson Steven Mabona confirmed that the department is taking immediate action to safeguard the health of students.
Schools are now required to regulate food vendors and tuckshops strictly. Only nutritious food is allowed to be sold, and no expired or repackaged items will be permitted. Vendors must also ensure compliance with Regulation 638, which governs the safety and acceptability of food sold in schools. Schools and School Governing Bodies (SGBs) are expected to enforce these measures rigorously.
In addition, the GDE is mandating that all food vendors obtain a Certificate of Acceptability from the local Health Department. Food premises and stalls must be inspected and approved before operating. SGBs are tasked with verifying that all food is sourced from reputable suppliers and properly barcoded to ensure safety.
To further protect learners, the department is advising parents to pack lunches for their children instead of providing lunch money. Schools are encouraged to communicate this to parents and work with community organizations to prevent future incidents. These measures will remain in place until updated food safety guidelines are issued by the relevant authorities.
