The Gauteng Department of Social Development (DSD) hosted a Provincial Rainbow Dialogue at the Moses Molelekwa Art Centre in Thembisa on October 24 for Pride Month. The event focused on promoting diversity and equality within the LGBTIQA+ community. Families, friends, partners, and NPOs, including Thato One Big Family, gathered to address challenges faced by the queer community. It also raised awareness about the department’s support programs.

Estelle Otto, a social work policy developer, spoke about the struggles the LGBTIQA+ community faces, including family rejection and mental health issues. She highlighted the department’s commitment to preventing hate crimes. Otto stressed the need for early intervention to address these challenges. She also called for greater societal acceptance and understanding of the queer community.

Pearl Maobelo emphasized the importance of collaborating with stakeholders like the Gauteng Department of Community Safety. The goal is to foster awareness programs that promote tolerance. Maobelo acknowledged the progress made under the current legislative framework but noted ongoing challenges. She thanked the queer community for their openness and reaffirmed the department’s commitment to continuing these important dialogues.
