The fire that erupted on the mountainside of the Hemel and Aarde Valley in Hermanus, spreading towards Hawston in the Overstrand Municipality, has been successfully contained.
Overstrand Municipal Manager Dean O’Neill confirmed that roads between Hawston and Fisherhaven, previously closed due to heavy smoke and proximity to the blaze, are now open to motorists. “We are currently monitoring the area for any potential flare-ups,” O’Neill added, assuring residents that the situation remains under control.
The fire, which broke out on the mountainside, caused significant concern as it moved closer to residential areas and major roads. Emergency services acted swiftly to contain the flames, with firefighters battling challenging conditions to prevent further spread.
This incident follows recognition in June for firefighters who displayed exceptional dedication in combating 119 fires in the Table Mountain National Park earlier this year. Among those, the Castle Rock fire—lasting over a week—was highlighted as one of the most challenging to manage.
The efforts in the Hemel and Aarde Valley fire once again underline the critical role of firefighters in safeguarding communities from devastating blazes. The Overstrand Municipality has extended gratitude to all responders involved in the operation.
Authorities urge residents to remain vigilant, report any signs of smoke or fire immediately, and adhere to safety guidelines during fire season.
