Eskom is once again reminding prepaid electricity customers to update their meters before the November 24, 2024 deadline to ensure uninterrupted service. All prepaid meters are required to be updated to Key Revision Number (KRN) 2 as per the Standard Transfer Specification Association (STSA) regulations.
After the deadline, prepaid meters that have not been updated will no longer accept electricity tokens, effectively rendering the meter inoperable. Eskom is urging customers to complete this update process to avoid any disruptions to their electricity supply.
To update your meter, customers will receive two 20-digit update codes in addition to the usual 20-digit prepaid token when purchasing electricity. To update your meter, follow these steps: Enter the first 20-digit update token and wait for it to be accepted. Then, enter the second 20-digit update token and wait for it to be accepted. Finally, enter your 20-digit prepaid token to recharge your units as usual.
Eskom has emphasized that any electricity tokens bought in advance must be used before the meter is updated. Once the meter is recoded, older tokens will no longer be accepted. Additionally, there is no charge for recoding your meter. Eskom warns customers to report anyone who attempts to charge for this service, as no Eskom staff or suppliers will visit homes to collect a fee for the update.
If you need help with the recoding process, Eskom has made various resources available. You can SMS Eskom at 31220 for assistance or contact the Call Centre at 0860 103 089. Eskom has also opened Customer Services Hubs and Customer Network Centres (CNCs) to further assist customers facing difficulties with the update.
Eskom spokesperson Joyce Zingoni reiterated that Eskom has pre-coded its systems to accommodate the update, and customers are required to complete the final step for a successful transition to the new software. She encouraged customers to take action before the November 24 deadline to ensure they continue to receive service without interruption.
In summary, all prepaid electricity customers must update their meters by November 24 to avoid complications. The update process is straightforward and free of charge, but it requires timely action to ensure your meter continues to work properly.
