Durban High School (DHS) is mourning the untimely death of Asange Ngam, a promising young rugby star whose life was tragically cut short. The Grade 8 learner passed away after reportedly suffering a complication from a blood clot. Asange had made a lasting impact both at DHS and in his previous school, Penzance Primary, where his passion for rugby and leadership qualities shone brightly. At Penzance, he was already a force to be reckoned with, captaining the 1st XV rugby team during his Grade 7 year. His rise to prominence continued at DHS, where he became a pivotal member of the U14A rugby team and was known for his unwavering dedication and leadership, both on and off the field.
DHS remembers Asange not only for his athletic talent but for his character. A model student, he excelled in academics as well as sport, balancing both with a level of maturity beyond his years. The school described him as a young man with a “quirky smile” who was always ready to laugh and bring joy to those around him. His presence was a source of light for his friends and teammates, and his ability to inspire others was evident in every aspect of his life. Asangeβs legacy will remain a central part of the DHS community, continuing to motivate students and staff alike long after his passing.
The loss of Asange has left a deep void, not only within the DHS family but also at his previous school, Penzance Primary. Both institutions have expressed their profound sorrow, with Penzance remembering him as a beloved boy with an infectious laugh, who touched the hearts of all who knew him. DHS extended heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the wider school community, emphasizing the importance of coming together in support during this devastating time. Asangeβs memory, they said, will endure, inspiring those who were privileged to know him to live with the same warmth, determination, and leadership that he embodied.
Messages of sympathy have poured in from across the community, with nearby schools such as Maris Stella and St Henry’s Marist College offering their support to the Ngam family and the entire DHS community. In the face of such loss, these schools echoed the sentiment of unity, offering thoughts and prayers to Asangeβs loved ones. As DHS stated, “Asangeβs memory will remain an integral part of our schoolβs legacy,” a reminder that while his time with us was brief, his impact will continue to resonate for years to come. RIP, Asange Ngam.
