Court 12 at the Durban Magistrate’s Court was filled to capacity on Thursday morning as Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, a Member of Parliament for the MK Party, appeared for the first time on charges of incitement related to the deadly riots that took place in July 2021. The unrest, which led to the tragic loss of over 350 lives, was sparked by the arrest of her father, former President Jacob Zuma, who had been sentenced to 15 months in prison by the Constitutional Court for contempt of court after he failed to comply with an order to appear before the Zondo State Capture Commission.

Duduzile faces allegations of inciting violence after she posted several videos and images on X (formerly Twitter) during the unrest, showing scenes of riots and truck fires across KwaZulu-Natal and parts of Gauteng. Each of her posts was accompanied by the hashtag #FreeJacobZuma, which authorities have linked to the widespread disorder that followed.

At the court proceedings on Thursday, Duduzile appeared calm and composed, dressed in a black dress and an MK Party head wrap. She smiled as she entered the courtroom, which was packed with supporters. Among the crowd was her twin brother, Duduzane Zuma, who spoke to the media, expressing hope that the case would not be another instance of the Zuma family facing unfair treatment.

Prominent lawyer, Advocate Dali Mpofu, was present and is expected to represent Duduzile in the ongoing legal process. Mpofu, known for his leadership within the MK Party, was seen discussing the case with Duduzile before the hearing began.

Also present in court were several members of the MK Party, including Secretary General Floyd Shivambu and other key figures like Nathi Nhleko, Willies Mchunu, and Magasela Mzobe, who showed their solidarity with Duduzile. Bonginkosi Khanyile, who was recently dismissed as the MK Party Youth Leader ahead of the May 29 elections, also attended the hearing in support of Duduzile.

The case continues to attract significant attention, with supporters and critics alike closely watching the legal proceedings. The charges against Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla reflect the ongoing complexities surrounding the aftermath of the July 2021 unrest and the role of public figures in the events that unfolded.
