A powerful storm, which has been confirmed as a tornado, wreaked havoc across parts of Randfontein in western Gauteng on Wednesday, 28 November. Striking just after 1:15 p.m., the tornado particularly impacted the Umphakathi Mall, where several Boxer supermarket customers were injured, although most of the injuries were reported as minor. As the storm tore through the region, it left extensive damage in its wake, affecting areas such as Toekomsrus, Mohlakeng, and Randfontein itself.
Reports indicate that at least 24 people were hurt, while around 620 homes were damaged or destroyed. The tornado was powerful enough to rip off roofs, including one at Mohlakeng Mall, where significant structural damage occurred. Emergency services were quick to respond, and authorities have issued several warnings in light of the ongoing storm season in Gauteng.
The South African Weather Service had already cautioned residents in the region about the possibility of severe weather, and the storm has served as a reminder of the risks posed by such extreme events. The municipality, led by Rand West City Mayor William Matsheke, has expressed its commitment to assisting those affected. Efforts to help residents with temporary shelter and repairs are underway, as local authorities assess the extent of the damage.
The storm’s severity has highlighted the vulnerability of communities in the area to extreme weather, particularly in the West Rand, where severe storms have become more frequent in recent years. As the storm season continues, residents are urged to remain vigilant and prepared for more potential weather events. Authorities are working closely with disaster management teams to ensure the safety and recovery of those affected by the tornado.
