Two Grade 10 learners in Limpopo have tragically taken their own lives after reportedly failing to progress to the next grade. The two young males were from Mphaphuli High School and Thohoyandou Technical School in the Vhembe district. The devastating news has shaken the local communities and left their families and peers in deep grief.

MEC for the Provincial Department of Education, Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya, expressed her sorrow over the deaths, extending condolences to the families. “No words can adequately express the pain and grief that comes with losing a child. May you find strength and comfort in the memories you shared with your loved ones,” she said. Her heartfelt message resonated with many who have been impacted by the tragedy.

The Department of Education spokesperson, Matome Taueatsoala, urged the schools’ learners, educators, and staff to seek support during this difficult time. “Counselling services are available to help process emotions,” he said. He emphasized the importance of creating a supportive environment for all learners to promote mental well-being, especially in the wake of such tragic events.

The department’s psychosocial team, in collaboration with the Department of Social Development, will visit the affected families and schools to offer counselling and support. Taueatsoala also encouraged parents and guardians to play a crucial role in nurturing their children’s mental health.

Learners struggling with suicidal thoughts are urged to reach out for help. The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) helpline and the Department of Education’s counseling services are available to provide support, with the helpline number being 0800 567 567.
