In a move that’s set the political landscape abuzz, former EFF chairperson Advocate Dali Mpofu has announced his departure from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), revealing that he is joining the MK Party, led by former president Jacob Zuma. The seasoned political figure made the bombshell revelation during an interview on SABC Morning Live, where he shared his reasons for walking away from the EFF after more than a decade of involvement.

Mpofu’s decision stems from his growing disillusionment with the current state of South African politics, particularly the Government of National Unity (GNU), which he described as a “betrayal” of the country’s liberation struggles. “The GNU is a betrayal to the cause of liberating South Africa,” Mpofu asserted, stressing that his true political passion lies in a party that champions national unity—something he believes the MK Party does best.

“The MK Party has been true to fostering unity, total black and progressive unity,” Mpofu said. “I feel that total liberation would be achieved through the MK Party.” His words were heavy with the conviction that this new political direction aligns with his vision for a more united and decolonized South Africa.

Despite the shift, Mpofu made it clear that his decision to join the MK Party was not made lightly. “I’ve done a lot of soul-searching,” he confessed. He emphasized that his move was a calculated one, rooted in his belief that the MK Party holds the key to a broader vision of national and progressive unity—one that he feels is urgently needed in the current political climate.

Mpofu also reflected on his political journey, acknowledging his past associations with both the ANC and the EFF. “I don’t believe you have to die in the ANC, EFF, or MK,” he said. “But for now, the MK Party represents a much broader vision for decolonization and carries the alternative to unite our people.”

When asked directly about what prompted his exit from the EFF, Mpofu was straightforward: “We need to take the shortest route.” He also clarified that his decision to join the MK Party was not influenced by the recent defection of EFF leader Floyd Shivambu, who made a similar move to the MK Party. Mpofu emphasized that his EFF membership had already lapsed, making the announcement of his new political allegiance a natural next step.

As South Africa’s political stage heats up with shifting alliances and rising tensions, Dali Mpofu’s exit from the EFF marks a significant moment in the country’s ongoing struggle for unity and liberation. His decision to join the MK Party will undoubtedly spark further debate, but for now, Mpofu is firm in his belief that the MK Party is the path to achieving the true unity and decolonization he’s long fought for.
