The Mothibistad Regional Court in the Northern Cape has handed down a sentence of two life terms plus 45 years to 33-year-old Thabo Gift Magwatane for his involvement in the robbery, kidnapping, and assault of two matric learners.

In 2022, Magwatane and a co-accused, who is still on trial, unlawfully entered the home of the victims in Dithakong village near Mothibistad. The victims were taken to a nearby river where they suffered serious harm.

The survivors spent three weeks in intensive care and have undergone reconstructive surgery as part of their recovery process.

Mojalefa Senokoatsane, spokesperson for the Provincial National Prosecuting Authority, commended the victims for their bravery and reaffirmed the NPA’s commitment to addressing Gender-Based Violence and ensuring justice is served.

This verdict underscores the importance of protecting vulnerable members of society and supporting survivors on their path to healing.
