The high-profile Cape Town High Court trial involving alleged underworld figures Jerome Booysen, André Naude, and others is set to resume today after a brief postponement due to medical reasons. The trial, which has captivated public attention, centers on the 2017 murder of steroid smuggler Brian Wainstein in Constantia, along with numerous other charges, including extortion.
The case had to be delayed yesterday after one of the accused required urgent medical attention for a pre-existing epilepsy condition. However, the proceedings will continue today without one of the key figures—Mark Lifman. Lifman, an alleged kingpin with deep ties to the underworld and private security industry, was tragically gunned down in George two weeks ago, just as the trial was picking up momentum. His death marks the fourth fatality among the accused in the Wainstein murder case.
Lifman’s connections to criminal rackets, including alleged extortion activities, have been a significant focus of the investigation. His untimely death raises questions about the ongoing threat surrounding this case, which is already shrouded in violence and intimidation.
Meanwhile, the two men arrested in connection with Lifman’s murder have had their case postponed to December 12 and 13 for a bail hearing at the George Magistrate’s Court. As the trial continues, the families of the victims and the public eagerly await developments in what is becoming one of South Africa’s most notorious gang-related criminal cases.
