Residents of Villa Liza in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni, are expressing their frustration after the police allegedly failed to act on the arrest of a man caught with counterfeit documents. On 3 January, the Umphakathi and Yizo Yizo Anti-Crime Unit apprehended the suspect, who was reportedly manufacturing fake documents, including divorce decrees, qualifications, and car registration papers. After the arrest, the suspect was taken to Dawn Park Police Station, but according to residents, the police refused to take further action, citing the absence of victims willing to file formal complaints.

The community, however, believes that this man has been conning local residents for some time, and they claim to have proof of his criminal activities. β€œWe know people who have been scammed by him, but they are too afraid to come forward because of safety concerns,” one resident explained. Another added, β€œIf the police require victims to step forward, this man will just keep getting away with it. It feels like we’re being let down.

Thobela Maja, a member of the Yizo Yizo Anti-Crime Unit, explained that the community had called on their assistance after discovering the man’s fraudulent activities. β€œWe were told that he’s been moving from one area to another, owing people money and selling fake documents,” Maja said. Residents are concerned that the suspect may soon leave the area and continue his fraudulent schemes elsewhere.

Among the fake documents recovered were purported divorce decrees, fraudulent educational certificates, and altered car registration papers, with residents questioning who might be purchasing these documents and whether they have any legal standing. β€œThese documents are being sold for between R1,000 and R4,000. It’s concerning to think that people may be using them for illegal purposes,” one worried resident stated. Many believe that this situation highlights a broader issue of rising crime in the area, and frustration is growing over the police’s reluctance to intervene.

Captain Nelda Sekgobela, spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni District Police, confirmed that the matter is under investigation. As the community waits for action, residents are calling for greater police accountability and stronger measures to address the rising tide of fraudulent activity in the area.
