The bail application of Ferrel and Darren Govender is set to continue in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, with the brothers having spent 30 days in Westville Prison since their arrest for the murder of Shailen Singh. The Govender brothers were detained on January 1, 2025, in connection with the death of Singh, a 32-year-old man who was fatally shot on December 29, 2024, in a parking lot on Meridian Drive in Umhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal.

According to the State’s case, Singh’s murder was allegedly motivated by an affair he had with Ferrel’s girlfriend. Lead investigator Warrant Officer Bob Pillay stated in an affidavit that Ferrel is believed to have shot Singh 10 times during the attack. Despite these allegations, both Ferrel and Darren, who are businessmen, have denied any involvement in the murder and have maintained their innocence. They have expressed a desire to attend court to clear their names if granted bail.

Ferrel, the owner of Pro-Secure, a security company with a national footprint and more than 8,000 staff members, argued that his continued incarceration posed a risk to the livelihoods of his employees. He emphasized that his company directly employs 3,000 individuals, and his absence would have a significant impact on its operations.

Outside the courtroom, supporters of the Govender brothers have gathered in protest, calling for their release. The court proceedings are expected to continue on Thursday, with the State set to present further arguments. A potential ruling on the brothers’ bail application could follow, as the legal battle surrounding their charges remains ongoing.
