A 39-year-old man suspected of being behind a series of crimes involving the abuse and kidnapping of minors in Emalahleni, Mpumalanga, has been arrested. The suspect is accused of targeting children aged between seven and 13 in a string of incidents that occurred between 2023 and 2024.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, spokesperson for the South African Police Service, the suspect would drive around the area in his vehicle, targeting children. He allegedly instructed the children to go to a local tuck shop, separating them from other kids, and then followed them to abduct them. The victims were reportedly forced into his vehicle, and police believe the man is responsible for at least 10 cases of abuse and kidnapping in the Emalahleni, Vosman, and Mhluzi areas.
The arrest came as the suspect appeared in court in Vosman for a separate matter, involving assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm in a gender-based violence case. Police were able to connect him to the series of crimes following a thorough investigation by the Family Violence unit.
Acting Police Commissioner Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi commended the police team for their dedication in pursuing the case. He expressed confidence that the investigation and legal team would present a strong case in court, ensuring that the victims would receive justice.
The suspect is scheduled to appear before the Emalahleni Magistrateβs Court on Monday, January 20, where he will face charges related to the abuse and kidnapping cases. The community, shaken by these incidents, has praised the police for their swift and thorough response.
