A 30-year-old Angolan national has been arrested at Cape Town International Airport for his involvement in drug trafficking. The man was apprehended by members of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, more commonly known as the Hawks, on Wednesday after arriving on a flight from Brazil via Dubai. According to Lieutenant Colonel Siyabulela Vukubi, the provincial spokesperson for the Hawks, the arrest followed a tip-off from intelligence sources about a suspect traveling to Cape Town from overseas.

Once the suspect was identified and located at the airport, authorities searched his luggage and discovered cocaine concealed within three suitcases. The drugs were found carefully hidden, and the value of the cocaine brought into the country has yet to be determined by the authorities. The arrest was part of an ongoing effort by the Hawks’ South African Narcotics Enforcement Bureau (SANEB) and Cape Town Border Police to clamp down on drug smuggling operations at the country’s international airports. The suspect is expected to appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Friday to face charges related to drug trafficking.

The bust comes as part of a larger effort to combat the growing trend of international drug smuggling into South Africa. Just earlier this month, on December 2, KwaZulu-Natal police seized around R80 million worth of cocaine in what has been described as a major drug bust at the Durban Harbour. This seizure marks a significant success for law enforcement agencies battling the flow of illegal narcotics into the country, and highlights the increasing sophistication of drug-smuggling networks operating between Brazil and South Africa.

According to Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the spokesperson for the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Police, the cocaine discovered in Durban was still in its pure form. The consignment had arrived in South Africa from Brazil via another country, with the drugs disguised as kidney beans. The vessel carrying the shipment had left Brazil in early November, and the authorities had been closely monitoring its progress. The ship finally docked at Durban Harbour on November 30, where the container was transported to a warehouse on South Coast Road in the Bluff area for further inspection.

The investigation into the Durban drug shipment continues, with authorities still working to track the intended recipients of the drugs. The cocaine found was destined for Johannesburg, but to date, no arrests have been made in connection with that shipment. The discovery underscores the challenges faced by authorities in tackling the global trade in illicit substances, especially with international syndicates attempting to disguise their shipments in increasingly creative ways.

Both the Cape Town and Durban drug busts serve as a stark reminder of the scale of the drug trade operating in and around South Africa. While these arrests highlight the vigilance of law enforcement agencies, they also reveal the complexity and global nature of the problem. As investigations continue, authorities are working tirelessly to dismantle the networks responsible for these illegal shipments, with both domestic and international cooperation being essential in the fight against drug trafficking.
