Premier Soccer League General Manager Andile ‘Ace’ Ncobo has weighed in on the ongoing spat between ANC leaders Fikile Mbalula and Tony Yengeni, delivering a sarcastic remark that has caught the attention of social media. Mbalula, the ANC’s secretary-general, recently announced that he would take action against party veteran Yengeni for posting negative comments about the ANC’s leadership. Ncobo, however, seemed to playfully mock Mbalula’s stance by recalling a significant moment from their shared past in 2008, when Mbalula was “forced” by Yengeni, Nyami Booi, and Mcebisi Skwatsha to attend an initiation school as part of a cultural rite of passage.

In a Facebook post on Monday, Ncobo suggested that Mbalula should not take the matter personally if those involved in his initiation process are now subject to political scrutiny. His comment, dripping with sarcasm, implied that Mbalula should separate personal history from political duty when charging Yengeni for bringing the ANC into disrepute. This jab seemed to underline the complexities of intra-party dynamics, where political actions sometimes conflict with longstanding personal or cultural connections.

The tension escalated when Mbalula also vowed to charge Yengeni and another ANC member, Obed Bapela, over a controversial visit to Morocco that allegedly violated ANC policy. Yengeni, never one to shy away from confrontation, took to social media to criticize the venue for the ANC’s 113th birthday celebrations, which Mbalula had heavily promoted. Yengeni, who has a history of taking bold stances, questioned the choice of the Khayelitsha Stadium, which led to further jabs from political figures like former Gauteng Premier Mbhazima Shilowa.

Meanwhile, the fallout extended beyond social media drama, as the Mpumalanga ANC distanced itself from the ANC’s 113th anniversary celebrations in Khayelitsha due to the venue’s perceived inadequacy. Citing the stadium’s small capacity, Mpumalanga’s leadership, under Provincial Secretary Muzi Chirwa, announced they would host their own celebrations later in January, reflecting growing discontent within the party. This series of events highlights the deepening rifts within the ANC as it grapples with internal tensions while trying to maintain unity in the face of political and cultural disagreements.
