A 29-year-old man has been arrested after a video capturing him allegedly assaulting two women in the Eastern Cape went viral, prompting swift action from the police. The incident occurred in Sholorha Location outside Elliotdale on Thursday, January 30, 2025.
Eastern Cape police emphasized their commitment to combating Gender-Based Violence (GBV), with spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa confirming that a case of assault was opened immediately following the video’s circulation. “A preliminary investigation was conducted with no success, but the suspect was eventually identified and arrested,” Mawisa stated.

The man has been charged with assault and is set to appear at the Elliotdale Magistrate’s Court on Monday. “At this stage, the motive is unclear and forms part of the continuing investigation,” Mawisa added.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) issued a strong condemnation of the attack, reaffirming their dedication to addressing GBV. “Such heinous crimes have no place in our society. SAPS remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens, particularly women and children. We will continue to work tirelessly to investigate and prosecute GBV cases and to provide support and protection to victims,” the statement read.
