A 19-year-old boy tragically lost his life while attempting to cross the overflowing Vals River near Lindley in the Free State on the evening of January 7. The incident occurred at approximately 6 p.m. when the teenager, along with two friends, was returning home from a local municipality camp. As they tried to navigate the swollen river, the strong current swept the young man away.

One of his friends quickly rushed to seek help, and the police were alerted to the situation. The Welkom Search and Rescue Diving Unit responded promptly, initiating an intensive search operation that lasted overnight. By 10 a.m. on January 8, the victim’s body was recovered from the river, bringing a tragic end to the search. The teenager’s identity was confirmed by his father, who was present at the scene.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring expressed the dangers posed by the ongoing heavy rains in the region, urging the public to remain vigilant. “They should avoid attempting to swim across overflowing rivers and muddy stationary waters at quarries,” Mophiring cautioned, emphasizing the importance of caution during such hazardous weather conditions.

The boy’s drowning serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with crossing fast-moving waters during the rainy season. As investigations into the incident continue, an inquest has been opened to determine the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy. Local authorities are calling for increased awareness, particularly for parents, to ensure the safety of children and young people during this period of heavy rainfall.
