Thohoyandou, Limpopo β€” A 50-year-old man and his 40-year-old female companion are expected to appear in court on Thursday after being caught with nine unlicensed firearms and ammunition, following a dramatic high-speed chase in Thohoyandou.

The arrest was the result of an intelligence-driven operation executed by the Limpopo Provincial Investigation Unit and the Provincial Tracking Team.

According to provincial police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the operation kicked off after authorities received a tip-off about a suspicious vehicle reportedly loaded with illegal firearms traveling on the R524 road towards Punda Maria.

β€œThe vehicle matching the description was spotted, and upon noticing police, the driver attempted to flee. A chase ensued and police cornered the vehicle at Tshikhudini village,” said Ledwaba.

Upon searching the vehicle, officers initially discovered a 9mm pistol, prompting immediate arrest. However, a deeper investigation revealed a total of nine unlicensed firearms, along with a cache of ammunition. Authorities are now working to determine whether the weapons are linked to other crimes in the region or form part of a broader criminal network.

The suspects are facing charges related to illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, and police say more charges could follow pending further investigation.

β€œThe suspects failed to provide lawful documentation for the weapons. We commend our members for their swift and professional response,” Ledwaba added.

Gun violence and firearm trafficking remain serious concerns in Limpopo, and this operation is being hailed as a major breakthrough in ongoing efforts to crack down on illegal arms across the province.

The suspects will appear before the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 17 April 2025.
