In a significant blow to illegal mining operations, six undocumented foreign nationals were arrested on April 28, 2025, in Sizamile, Port Nolloth, Northern Cape, during an intelligence-driven crackdown under Operation Vala Umgodi.
The South African Police Service (SAPS), in collaboration with other law enforcement units, seized a quantity of unpolished diamonds and an undisclosed amount of cash during the arrests. The suspects now face charges of illegal possession of precious stones and violations of South Africaβs immigration laws.

Operation Vala Umgodi is a national initiative aimed at dismantling illegal mining syndicates and curbing the flow of illicit minerals, particularly in hotspot regions like the Northern Cape. The operation has been active across several provinces and continues to yield results through targeted raids and intelligence-led policing.
βThis arrest is part of our sustained effort to deal decisively with illegal mining and the criminal networks behind it,β said a SAPS spokesperson. βWe will continue to protect South Africaβs natural resources and ensure compliance with immigration laws.β
The suspects remain in custody as investigations continue, and more arrests may follow as authorities widen the net on illegal mining activities in the region.
