President Cyril Ramaphosa has reaffirmed South Africaโ€™s commitment to global peacebuilding, highlighting the country’s active role in international diplomacy โ€” particularly in efforts to help end the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Speaking on South Africaโ€™s foreign policy priorities, Ramaphosa said the country is working alongside global and African partners to promote dialogue, de-escalation, and ultimately, a โ€œjust and lasting peace.โ€ He emphasized that peace cannot be dictated, but must be negotiated, with respect for sovereignty, security, and humanitarian principles.

South Africa has maintained a careful diplomatic stance in the Russia-Ukraine crisis, calling for balanced mediation rather than siding with either bloc. Ramaphosaโ€™s statement reinforces that approach โ€” positioning the country as a peace broker on the world stage, despite criticism from some quarters over its perceived neutrality.

As the conflict drags on with devastating consequences, South Africaโ€™s message is clear: the path forward must be rooted in diplomacy, not destruction. And Pretoria wants a seat at the table in shaping that outcome.
