A devastating accident involving a taxi and a cow has left a Philippi family in mourning. The tragic incident took place on November 17 in Tarkastad, Eastern Cape, and claimed the lives of eight family members from a single household.

Nomfundo Nogoxo, 56, a relative of the victims, shared that the family was returning from the funeral of her brother’s wife and son in Butterworth. The son, 30, had been tragically stabbed to death, and his mother passed away from shock two days later.

Reflecting on the incident, Nomfundo expressed the fear and grief her family now faces. “All these people were coming from that funeral. We’re shocked because we have to travel to the Eastern Cape again. We’re scared to travel after the accident, but we have no choice,” she said. She also shared how she had nearly joined the ill-fated trip but had canceled at the last moment, believing her decision may have saved her life.

Another family member, Namhla Nogoxo, 33, is calling for support from the public. “It’s hard to be at home knowing our family members are gone. We need serious counseling and financial help for the funeral,” she said. The family first learned of the accident from a relative in Gauteng after their calls to the deceased went unanswered.

Xolile Nqatha, Western Cape’s MEC of Transport and Community Safety, offered his condolences to the grieving family and urged farmers to take extra precautions to secure livestock and prevent such heartbreaking tragedies in the future.
