The Gauteng Department of Education has confirmed the tragic passing of Retshegofetse Sennelo, a matric learner from Krugersdorp High School, who sustained fatal injuries during a cricket match. The incident occurred during a First XI game against Christian Brothers College (CBC) in Boksburg, where Sennelo collided with a teammate while fielding. On-site paramedics promptly responded, rushing him to Netcare Sunward Park Hospital. Despite undergoing emergency surgery, doctors were unable to stop the internal bleeding, and Sennelo sadly passed away on Saturday night.
The school detailed that the second player involved in the collision suffered a concussion but was treated and later released into his parents’ care from a hospital in Krugersdorp. In an emotional statement, Krugersdorp High School expressed their condolences to Sennelo’s family, particularly his mother, Olga Sennelo, who serves as the school’s SGB chairperson, as well as his brother Gomolemo, teammates, and coaches. The school community has been deeply shaken by this sudden loss, and support is being offered to students and staff affected by the tragedy.
Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane voiced his profound shock at the incident, emphasizing the department’s commitment to investigating safety protocols surrounding school sports. “We are devastated by the tragic passing of this young sportsman. Losing a learner in such circumstances is deeply painful, and we extend our sympathies to his family, friends, and the entire school community. We call for strength and comfort for all those affected during this difficult time,” said MEC Chiloane.
As the community mourns this heartbreaking loss, both Krugersdorp High School and the Gauteng Department of Education are working to ensure that the appropriate support systems are in place for those impacted. Further investigations into the safety measures of school sports activities will be conducted to prevent such incidents in the future.
