A 15-year-old boy has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after being found guilty of the tragic death of 14-year-old Naeema Marshall. The sentence was handed down on Tuesday, 28 January, at the Blue Downs Magistrates Court. In addition to the 10 years for the fatal incident, he also received three years for illegal possession of a firearm and one year for possessing illegal ammunition.
The incident occurred on 17 July 2023 when Naeema was visiting her aunt’s home in Kleinvlei. Earlier that day, while walking to a nearby spaza shop, she was approached by the boy, who requested a kiss. Naeema declined, and the boy reacted negatively, expressing that he could not accept the rejection.
Later that day, Naeema returned home and shared the interaction with her aunt. Not long after, the boy arrived at the house uninvited and, in a tense moment, took a firearm and caused her harm in front of family members before leaving the scene.
Following a thorough investigation, the boy was found guilty of the charges. He remained in custody throughout the trial, and his guilt was established beyond reasonable doubt. The Western Cape police management praised the investigation team and the prosecutor for their diligent work on the case.
The sentences will run concurrently, meaning the teenager will serve a total of 10 years in prison.
