The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms on Thursday, impacting Gauteng as well as the western and southern regions of Mpumalanga.
Forecasts predict rainfall between 15 to 25 mm, with the possibility of intense downpours ranging from 30 to 40 mm in some areas. This heavy rainfall could lead to localized flooding in vulnerable areas, especially in low-lying regions, busy highways, and informal settlements. Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant, particularly in areas prone to flooding.
“Thunderstorms are expected to develop in the late afternoon over southern Gauteng and southern Mpumalanga, moving northward into the rest of Gauteng and the western parts of Mpumalanga by evening,” SAWS stated.
Residents are advised to monitor weather conditions closely, as these thunderstorms could disrupt travel and cause damage in affected areas.
