On Thursday morning, 23 January, tragedy struck Ekuthuleni Primary School in Kraaifontein, Cape Town, when the school principal, 54, was shot dead in a targeted attack. The shooting occurred as students and staff were arriving, creating panic as children and parents scrambled for safety. A female teacher, who was in the car with the principal, was also injured and rushed to the hospital after being shot in the leg.

Witnesses described the horrifying scene as three armed men approached the vehicle and opened fire at close range. “It was a scary scene, and we’re lucky to be alive. I had to take my child home because she was crying and traumatized,” one parent recalled. The gunmen fled the scene immediately after the attack, leaving behind a community in shock and disbelief.
Police were quick to arrive at the school, with Captain Frederick van Wyk confirming that an investigation is underway. Detectives from the Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes Unit are on the scene gathering evidence, while efforts to locate the suspects continue. At this time, no arrests have been made, and the motives behind the shooting remain unclear.
Western Cape Education MEC David Maynier expressed his outrage over the killing, calling it a “terrible tragedy” for both the school and the broader community. He assured the public that support services were being provided to staff and students, and that police would work diligently to apprehend those responsible.
MEC for Police Oversight, Anroux Marais, also condemned the incident, emphasizing the case’s high priority. “My deepest condolences go to the family, loved ones, and the school community,” she said, expressing confidence in the ongoing investigation. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward to assist in solving this horrific crime.
