A 34-year-old suspect was arrested in connection with the hijacking and robbery of two off-duty police officers in Avoca Hills, KwaZulu-Natal, on Thursday evening. The officers, who are stationed at Greenwood Park Police Station, were attacked by an armed assailant at Courtown Crescent, where the suspect allegedly stole their firearms during the incident. The hijacking prompted an immediate response from a multidisciplinary law enforcement team.

The suspect was apprehended hours later in Inanda, following a coordinated operation led by the visible policing commander from Greenwood Park Police Station. The team, which included officers from Greenwood Park Crime Prevention, Durban North Task Team, Newlands Trio Task Team, and private security personnel, acted swiftly on information that led them to a property in Newton A, Inanda. Upon arrest, the suspect was found in possession of the two stolen firearms, along with 30 rounds of ammunition.

A subsequent search of the suspect’s residence uncovered two additional unlicensed firearms and 12 rounds of ammunition. The stolen vehicle was also recovered. Provincial SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, confirmed that the suspect would appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday to face charges related to the hijacking, robbery, and possession of illegal firearms.
