Lucas “Masterpieces” Moripe, affectionately known as Modimo wa Bolo, will be laid to rest in a Special Provincial Official Funeral on Thursday, 28 November. The funeral will take place at the Lotus Cemetery in Tshwane at 10 a.m.
In a statement issued by the Gauteng Province, signed by Phindile Baleni, Director-General and Secretary of the Cabinet, it was confirmed that President Cyril Ramaphosa had approved the request for Moripe’s funeral to be recognized as a Special Provincial Official Funeral, Category Two. This honor is a testament to Moripe’s legacy in South African football.
The former Orlando Pirates and Pretoria Bantu Callies player passed away on Tuesday, 19 November, at the Kalafong Hospital in Tshwane, leaving behind a rich footballing legacy.
During a moving memorial service held at Saulsville Arena in Atteridgeville on 26 November, the Gauteng MEC for Education, Sports, Arts, Culture, and Recreation, Matome Chiloane, praised Moripe’s unique style, stating, “While other players made the ball talk, Masterpieces made it sing and dance.”
The Moripe family, through spokesperson Oupa Moripe, expressed their admiration for the late football legend, stating, “We are honoring and celebrating the life of the dribbling wizard who played football so effortlessly.”
Moripe’s funeral will be a poignant occasion to celebrate the life and contributions of a football icon who brought joy to many through his exceptional skill on the field.
