Free State Social Development MEC, Mathabo Leeto, has expressed deep concern following a troubling case from Thaba-Nchu, where a 44-year-old man is accused of having a harmful relationship with a 13-year-old girl. The situation has drawn attention to the importance of protecting vulnerable children in communities. MEC Leeto has called for understanding and empathy in addressing this challenging case, highlighting the need for comprehensive care and support for the young girl involved.

To ensure the young girl receives the proper care, the Department of Social Development has assigned social workers to provide emotional and psychological support, along with family counseling. MEC Leeto emphasized the importance of providing a nurturing environment for the girl during this difficult time. β€œWe are committed to supporting this young girl and her family as they navigate through this difficult period,” she said. β€œWe trust that the appropriate legal channels will handle the situation with the attention and care it deserves.”

The incident has also brought attention to the broader issue of teen pregnancy in South Africa. According to Stats SA, 90,037 girls aged 10 to 19 gave birth between March 2021 and April 2022, with 660 of them being under the age of 13. These statistics highlight the need for better education, awareness, and community support to address such issues before they arise.

MEC Leeto has encouraged communities to become more involved in initiatives like the Molo Makhelwane programme, which promotes mutual support among neighbors. The initiative aims to create strong, caring communities where individuals look out for one another and provide guidance, especially to younger generations. “We all need to come together to help safeguard our children and ensure they grow up in environments that nurture their potential,” she stated.

In response to this particular case, the 44-year-old man was arrested on December 30, 2024, and is currently in court to face charges. The focus remains on providing continued care and support for the young girl and her family while working to build safer and more supportive communities for all.
