The Lebombo Port of Entry, a key border crossing between Mozambique and South Africa, has been temporarily closed following a series of incidents involving the deliberate setting of vehicles on fire on the Mozambican side. The closure was announced by Dr. Michael Masiapato, Commissioner of the Border Management Authority (BMA), in response to these security concerns.

In a statement, Dr. Masiapato emphasized that the closure was necessary to ensure the safety and security of all individuals using the port, including cross-border transporters, travelers, traders, and officials. The BMA, in coordination with Mozambican authorities and South African law enforcement, is actively monitoring the situation and is committed to reopening the port as soon as it is deemed safe.

“We urge all travelers, transporters, and stakeholders to suspend all travel through the Lebombo Port of Entry until further notice,” Dr. Masiapato stated. “Where possible, alternative routes to Mozambique should be used until the situation stabilizes.”

As part of the ongoing efforts to address the security threat, South African officials are on the ground providing assistance. Notably, seven Mozambican officials sought refuge on the South African side of the border for safety and protection.

The BMA is working closely with its counterparts on both sides of the border to ensure a swift resolution. Dr. Masiapato expressed appreciation for the cooperation of all parties involved, noting that maintaining safety and order remains the top priority.

The BMA will continue to provide updates as the situation unfolds and remains committed to ensuring the safety of all those crossing the border.
