In an extraordinary and bizarre case out of Miami-Dade County, Florida, a 29-year-old woman, Daisy Link, has fallen pregnant while incarcerated at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Centre. Link, who was arrested for fatally shooting her boyfriend, became pregnant through an unusual and highly unconventional method involving another inmate, Joan Depaz, 24, who is also facing a separate murder charge. The two women, who were previously housed together in the same facility, communicated through the air conditioning vents in their cells, which ultimately led to the unlikely conception. The pair, both of whom expressed a desire to have a child while incarcerated, developed a bond through these shared conversations, and it was through this connection that they began discussing the possibility of Link becoming pregnant.
According to Link and Depaz, the idea of starting a family together while in prison came after they realized they shared the same dream. Their relationship, initially built on casual conversations through the vents, grew into something deeper, with the women exchanging pictures and notes. Link explained in a recent interview that the sound of voices easily traveled through the vents, which were positioned in a way that allowed the women to communicate across different floors. The couple even had to stand on their toilets to ensure the conversation reached one another. The isolation of prison life only seemed to fuel the connection, and before long, the women began discussing how they could make the idea of pregnancy a reality.
The plan was anything but ordinary. Depaz suggested using the ventilation system to transport sperm from one cell to the other. The two women created a makeshift line with bedding material, allowing Depaz to send small packages, wrapped in Saran Wrap, through the vent. Depaz revealed that she would send the sperm multiple times a day over the course of a month. Once the packages reached Link, she would use yeast infection applicators to administer the sperm. The process was repeated for a while until Link, to her astonishment, found herself pregnant. In an emotional interview, Link expressed disbelief that the plan had worked, saying, “I can’t believe it worked. I think everything happened for a reason.”
In June 2024, Link gave birth to a daughter, who now lives with Depaz’s mother, marking a milestone as the new grandmother’s first grandchild. Despite their separation within the prison system, Link and Depaz maintain a relationship, frequently communicating by phone and participating in video calls with their daughter. Link spoke proudly about her child’s future, sharing her hope that the little girl would grow up to achieve great things. DNA tests conducted in November confirmed that Depaz is the biological father of the child, solidifying the unusual nature of their parental connection.
The events surrounding Link and Depaz have left many questioning the lengths to which inmates might go to carry out such a plan, and the case has captured widespread media attention. Link’s mother, when learning of the circumstances surrounding her daughter’s pregnancy, expressed shock and disbelief at the method used. “I heard what they said happened, the AC vent thing, which is ludicrous and ridiculous,” she said, echoing the sentiment of many who find the story almost unbelievable. While the situation raises ethical and legal concerns about prison security and the consequences of such actions, it also highlights the lengths to which individuals will go in pursuit of their personal desires, even under the most restrictive of circumstances.
