A brutal attack by armed intruders has left a family in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni, devastated after two of their loved ones were killed, and another left fighting for their life in hospital. On the night of 9 December, three men, armed with guns and concrete slabs, broke into a home in the Mogoba area. The intruders used the slabs to force open the door before confronting the family, who were asleep at the time.
Bongani Molefe, the husband and father of the family, recounted the terrifying ordeal, explaining how he was awakened by a loud knock on the door. The armed men demanded cellphones, cash, and laptops. Despite Bongani telling them he had no laptop, the intruders continued to threaten him with their firearms. As Bongani lay frozen in fear, he suddenly heard gunshots, thinking they were fired into the air.
When the attackers fled with R2 500 in cash and the familyβs cellphones, Bongani quickly realised the gravity of the situation. His wife, Masabata Milwa (35), and son, Kevin Milwa (19), had been shot, and his 16-year-old son was critically injured. Despite the quick response of paramedics, Masabata and Kevin succumbed to their injuries, leaving Bongani shattered by the senseless loss.
Bongani, still reeling from the trauma, expressed his desire for justice and for the suspects to be apprehended. “I was praying they wouldn’t take my life,” he said, reflecting on the harrowing moment when his familyβs life was turned upside down. Masabataβs mother, gogo Mateboho Milwa, also voiced her frustration, urging the police to do more to remove firearms from criminals’ hands, highlighting the prevalence of guns in the wrong hands as a major cause of the violence.
Ekurhuleni district police spokesperson, Captain Nelda Sekgobela, confirmed that authorities are investigating the double murder and attempted murder case. In a separate incident in Daveyton, criminals also used concrete slabs to break into tenants’ rooms, highlighting a disturbing trend of violent home invasions in the area.
