A chilling wave of fear has swept through Hammanskraal, Tshwane, as police intensify investigations into a string of brutal murders that have left the community on edge. Gauteng police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Tommy Mthombeni, is leading Operation Shanela across Soshanguve and Rietgat, where the gruesome discoveries have sparked concerns that a serial killer might be on the loose. “We can’t confirm a serial killer yet, but we’re getting closer with every clue we crack,” Mthombeni stated, urging residents to remain vigilant as the probe unfolds.
On Saturday, 1 February, Mthombeni spearheaded a large-scale night operation resulting in the arrest of two suspects. However, he emphasized that more arrests are anticipated as the investigation continues. The urgency of the situation escalated following the tragic case of 17-year-old Koketso Ramatlo, who disappeared on 1 January 2025. Just two days later, her burnt body was found mere meters from her home in Kekana Gardens, sending shockwaves through the community.
The suspects, identified as Letlhogonolo Moche (19) and Thapelo Mkhabela (20), were initially taken into custody but were later released by the Moretele Magistrates Court on 30 January due to insufficient evidence. Their release has only deepened public anxiety, as residents fear that the perpetrator—or perpetrators—remain at large. Mthombeni assured that the police are leaving no stone unturned, promising relentless efforts to bring justice to the victims and their families.
Adding to the community’s distress is another disturbing case: 19-year-old Gontse Mokgohloa was found dead under the Majaneng bridge in Hammanskraal. She was last seen heading to a local club on 13 October 2024, and her family discovered her body several days later. The similarities between the cases have fueled speculation of a connection, further heightening fears. As investigations continue, police are urging anyone with information to come forward, hoping to piece together the puzzle before more lives are lost.
