Scholar transport operators in the Western Cape now have a valuable opportunity to have their vehicles checked for free, ensuring the safety of pupils ahead of the 2025 school year. The initiative, launched by the Western Cape Department of Mobility, offers free vehicle inspections at the Gene Louw Traffic Training College in Cape Town and the Beaufort West Vehicle Testing Centre. The checks began on Monday, 13 January, and are aimed at preventing accidents and breakdowns by addressing potential safety risks before students return to school.
Western Cape Mobility MEC Isaac Sileku emphasized the importance of vehicle safety in protecting children during their daily commutes. “Ensuring the safety of our children begins with the vehicles that transport them every day,” said Sileku. “This initiative is vital in preventing accidents and breakdowns, addressing safety issues before the school year begins. We urge all operators to take advantage of these free checks to help prioritize safety on our roads.”
Nkosiphendule Matika, a scholar transport operator from Khayelitsha, expressed his appreciation for the initiative. He noted that without this opportunity, the cost of getting his two taxis tested could exceed R1,000. “This is a good initiative, especially in January when finances are tight after the long December break,” he explained. “I will be taking one taxi for inspection on Monday and the other on Tuesday. This helps us ensure our vehicles are safe without the added financial burden.”
While the inspections are not a full roadworthy test, they will focus on key safety components such as tyres, brakes, lights, suspension, CV joints, electrical systems, exhaust system, wipers, and license discs. Parents, like Nokuzola Njova from Khayelitsha, have voiced their support for the initiative. “When we entrust our children to scholar transport, we are trusting that the vehicles are safe,” she said. “Itβs important that drivers use this opportunity to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy for the safety of our children.”
The free vehicle checks will continue on Monday, 13 January, and Tuesday, 14 January. Transport operators unable to attend the inspections at Gene Louw Traffic College can contact the department to make alternate arrangements.
