On 4 November, Jeffrey Masina, 35, was found dead in a government mortuary, two days after his family reported him missing. He had told his relatives he was visiting a friend, but when he didn’t return home, they grew increasingly worried.
His body was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds, though the circumstances of his death remain unclear. It is not yet known if he was killed during a robbery or if there was another motive. The Ekurhuleni District Police are investigating and have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
Jeffrey’s body was found near a church tent in Daveyton, not far from where he was last seen. His family is devastated, struggling to make sense of his sudden and violent death. His uncle, Leslie Thipe, expressed the family’s frustration: “We tried to get answers from his friend, but nothing makes sense. We leave everything to God. We’re not happy with the way my niece died.”
A well-known and respected figure in his community, Jeffrey was a dedicated member of the Shinkyokushin Karate organization in Daveyton. His instructor, Sensei Busisiwe Mavuso, described him as a selfless individual who always went the extra mile to help others. “He would sponsor fellow karateka members from his own pocket when they didn’t have money to attend tournaments,” Mavuso said.
Jeffrey’s death has left a significant void in the karate community. At his funeral on 14 November, members of Shinkyokushin Karate performed a tribute, demonstrating techniques as his hearse made its way to the cemetery. They bowed to him as his coffin was lowered into the ground.
As the investigation continues, Jeffrey’s family holds on to hope for justice. The community remains united in their call for answers, mourning the loss of a man whose generosity and kindness touched many lives.
