A Mabopane community was left in shock following the grim discovery of a body believed to have been chopped, burnt, and buried under a bed in an RDP house in Block U Extension 1, Tshwane, on 16 October 2024. The unsettling incident came after residents reported a foul smell and smoke emanating from the house, prompting suspicion and investigation.
According to community members, a 23-year-old man who lived in the house had initially claimed that the smell and smoke were due to him burning a dead cat. However, upon further questioning, the man fled the scene, and a search of the property revealed the horrific discovery of a human body hidden beneath the bed. Some locals, who suspected the man may have been involved with drugs, began searching the surrounding area for him but were unable to locate him.
The discovery has raised serious concerns for the family of 21-year-old Tebogo Andile Shongwe, who went missing on 5 October 2024. His mother, Lettie Shongwe (52), revealed that her son was friends with the young man living in the house where the body was found. “We fear the worst, especially with the discovery so close to home,” said Lettie, noting the troubling connection between her son’s disappearance and the chilling events that unfolded in the neighborhood. She continues to search for answers regarding her son’s whereabouts.
