City Power technicians took swift action on Tuesday, 21 January, to dismantle illegal electricity connections, or izinyokanyoka, in the Princess informal settlement in Roodepoort, Gauteng. This operation was part of ongoing efforts to combat electricity theft and prevent the extensive damage caused to the city’s power infrastructure.

During the operation, City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena confirmed that technicians confiscated 150 kilograms of stolen aluminium wire, valued at half a million rand. These illegal connections were found at various locations, including informal homes and businesses along Albertina Sisulu Road, such as a panel-beater shop, bakery, and a creche.

Mangena highlighted the severe safety risks posed by these unauthorized connections, which are often dangerously linked to streetlights and fences. These makeshift setups frequently overload circuits, damage critical infrastructure, and create hazardous conditions. “These connections are not only theft but a life-threatening danger, especially for children and the elderly,” Mangena warned. Tragically, several fatalities have already occurred due to these unsafe practices.

City Power’s operation is part of broader efforts to provide safe, reliable electricity to informal settlements. The utility has already completed two phases of electrification projects in the area and is awaiting approval from the Department of Human Settlements to formalize power connections for the remaining sections of the settlement.

This crackdown underscores City Power’s ongoing commitment to improving safety and ensuring that all communities have access to secure, legal electricity services, addressing both the challenges and dangers associated with informal power supplies.
