Controversial businessman Edwin Sodi is making moves to solidify his presence in the nightlife industry despite facing a potential ten-year ban from receiving government tenders. Known for his role in high-profile government contracts, Sodi has expanded his business portfolio by acquiring significant stakes in some of the most popular nightclubs in South Africa. In 2023, he took ownership of LIV Sandton, a trendy celebrity hotspot in Johannesburg, previously known as Taboo. Now, he’s set to add another high-profile venue to his portfolio with the launch of LIV on Bree in Cape Town on November 29.

As the majority shareholder in the new Cape Town nightclub, Sodi’s venture into the nightlife scene is poised to attract the who’s who of the entertainment industry. The launch promises to be a star-studded affair, with A-list guests expected to fill the venue, cementing Sodi’s reputation in the nightlife business. Sources familiar with the deal have confirmed that Sodi finalized the acquisition this month and is excited about the new project. The move signals a shift away from his previous government-linked endeavors, as Sodi continues to diversify his investments away from public sector dealings.

The move into nightclubs comes as Sodi faces legal and reputational challenges stemming from his involvement in the infamous R255-million asbestos contract fraud case. In June, Sodi appeared in the Bloemfontein High Court alongside former Free State Premier Ace Magashule and several others, facing serious charges of fraud and corruption. The case, which centers around a controversial government tender, has been postponed to April 2025, leaving Sodi in the public eye for reasons that have little to do with his nightlife ventures.

Despite his legal troubles, Sodi remains undeterred. His decision to enter the Cape Town nightlife market has been well-received, with industry insiders predicting the venue’s success. “Cape Town nightlife will never be the same again,” said a source close to Sodi’s business moves. “Edwin knows the business inside out. The Sandton LIV is already a success, and there’s no doubt that this new spot will be just as popular.”

Sodi has remained tight-lipped about the specifics of his latest venture, refraining from making public statements or comments about the nightclub. Instead, he has used his social media to drop hints about the new business, giving fans a glimpse into his plans. “It’s a done deal,” said one insider, confirming Sodi’s increasing focus on the entertainment sector. Whether or not Sodi’s government business dealings are behind him remains to be seen, but his commitment to expanding his nightlife empire is clear.
