This month marks the observance of mental health awareness, and veteran actor Sello Maake-KaNcube, through his foundation, has launched a program aimed at helping men address their mental health challenges by taking proactive steps to improve their well-being.
Over the years, numerous losses in the entertainment industry have been linked to mental health struggles. Notable figures like musician Riky Rick and actor Patrick Shai tragically ended their own lives. Patrick, a highly acclaimed actor, passed away in 2022 after succumbing to his mental health battles. Riky Rick was found dead in his studio last year, leaving behind a suicide note expressing the unbearable pain he had been enduring. He left behind a wife and children. Another prominent figure, HHP, also lost his life to mental health struggles, with his body being discovered by his helper.
Veteran actor Sello Maake-KaNcube believes that men have the power to transform society, but they must prioritize their mental well-being. “I believe men can change the world, but for that to happen, they need to take care of themselves. With my initiative, I’m working to help men discover their purpose in life. We offer counseling and steps to ensure men deal with their mental health challenges. This initiative is for everyone, including my peers in the industry,” he said.
In response to the high number of mental health-related deaths, the Ungazibulali Awareness Campaign was launched to empower those in the creative industry to fight against these social ills. “Depression and suicide rates are alarmingly high among celebrities. We’re conducting workshops in all provinces because actors are among the most affected by depression and suicidal thoughts,” said Nkululeko Khanyi, the champion of the program.
