LGBTQI+ activist Mawisa faced discrimination at Moloko Nightclub in Menlyn, Tshwane, after being denied access to the women’s restroom by security. Mawisa, a 34-year-old transgender MC, was taken aback as she had previously used the restroom without issue. She explained that, for her safety, she couldn’t risk using the men’s restroom, prompting her to confront the security guard.
The incident unfolded in front of her fans, adding to the discomfort. Mawisa, known for her activism and education around transgender issues, expressed her disappointment over being treated in this way, especially considering the LGBTQI+ community’s strong support for the venue. She emphasized the need for more inclusive spaces, especially in public establishments.
Moloko Nightclub’s management quickly responded to the incident. A spokesman confirmed that the security personnel involved were outsourced and apologized for the incident, stressing that the behavior did not reflect the nightclub’s values. He reassured the public that Moloko values its LGBTQI+ patrons and does not condone discriminatory actions.
The incident highlights the ongoing struggles the LGBTQI+ community faces, even in spaces that are supposed to be inclusive. Mawisa’s experience underscores the importance of ongoing education, tolerance, and respect in public spaces, particularly when it comes to ensuring everyone feels safe and welcome.
Moloko Nightclub has pledged to take action, ensuring such an incident does not happen again. The apology from management is seen as a positive step toward a more inclusive and respectful environment for all patrons, regardless of their gender identity.
